For this article, the number of unsubstantiated claims is utilized to estimate the time expected until a "catastrophic disclosure" occurs. The term was defined at the 2023 Sol Foundation's inaugural conference as an accidental disclosure of strong evidence of the existence of NHI. The phrase refers to this occurring outside the control of major human institutions, such as governments and militaries. One possible example of this is the crash of a piloted (space)craft or ET probe in the middle of a busy metropolis (such as the New York City Times Square). The distribution of humans across the Earth's surface, the population as a function of time, and the fraction of individuals owning a camera-phone, also versus time, are each taken into consideration as a foundation for a rigorous statistical analysis. This author adopts a skeptical and agnostic approach and does not conclude NHI or ET are real, but applies standard statistical distributions as educational examples of critical thinking to an issue which captures the imagination of the public as almost no other issue does. Making the extraordinary assumptions that sentient species other than humans exist, are capable of constructing vehicles for transportation, and are sufficiently fallible that their technology can malfunction, it becomes possible to quantify some potential answers to the question of how long it might be before smartphone imagery and/or video evidence appears on the web and becomes irrevocable via classification in the modern era. Results of simulations of numerous potential scenarios with varying degrees of optimism indicate that, if NHI are real, catastrophic disclosure may actually happen accidentally rather soon, with the mean expected year being 2040 +/- 20 under the default assumptions.2024-10-16T16:58:05Z8 pages, 3 figures, 4 equations, and 41 referencesLimina - The Journal of UAP Studies 2 (Spring 2025) 1-9Matthew Szydagishttp://arxiv.org/abs/2502.04331v1Energy needed to propel a tiny spacecraft to Proxima Centauri, and, an unstated assumption in Einstein's 1905 paper2025-02-05T18:59:05ZThe Breakthrough Starshot project aims to send a tiny 2 gram spacecraft to Proxima Centauri propelled by a light sail and powerful Earth-based lasers. We provide two derivations of the laser energy required to propel the spacecraft and give the reader the opportunity to decide which one is correct before providing the answer. In the second part of this paper we point out that one of the formulae in Einstein's amazing 1905 paper is correct only in certain limits, but Einstein fails to mention that. This has caused some confusion in the Breakthrough Starshot literature.2025-02-05T18:59:05ZC. J. UmrigarTyler A. Any given SETI survey, if no technosignatures are detected, should set upper limits based on the kinds of technosignatures it should have been able to detect; the sensitivity of many SETI searches requires that their target sources (e.g., Dyson spheres or Kardashev II/III level radio transmitters) emit with power far exceeding the kinds of technology humans have developed. In this paper, we instead turn our gaze Earthward, minimizing the axis of extrapolation by only considering transmission and detection methods commensurate with an Earth-2024 level. We evaluate the maximum distance of detectability for various present-day Earth technosignatures -- radio transmissions, atmospheric technosignatures, optical and infrared signatures, and objects in space or on planetary surfaces -- using only present-day Earth instruments, providing one of the first fully cross-wavelength comparisons of the growing toolbox of SETI techniques. In this framework, we find that Earth's space-detectable signatures span 13 orders of magnitude in detectability, with intermittent, celestially-targeted radio transmission (i.e., planetary radar) beating out its nearest non-radio competitor by a factor of $10^3$ in detection distance. This work highlights the growing range of ways that exoplanet technosignatures may be expressed, the growing complexity and visibility of the human impact upon our planet, and the continued importance of the radio frequencies in SETI.2025-02-03T23:38:01Z18 pages, 1 figure, 2 tables, published in AJAJ 169 118 (2025)Sofia Z. Here, we ask the question of whether they can form via focusing of radiation by compact binaries or intense lasers, or via trapping at the light ring of black holes. We provide evidence that gravitational lensing of radiation from a small, finite number of sources is not a viable mechanism to form black holes.2024-10-30T18:00:02Z4 pages, 1 figure. Depending on the associated time scales and the effect of the Rayleigh Plateau instability, this jet may either continue to rise, or may form satellite droplets via necking. Collision of these structures with a second incoming droplet, ejected from the same dispensing tip as the first droplet, may result in the formation of various lamellar patterns, depending on the impact conditions, giving rise to liquid mushroom and or umbrella structures. In this research, we experiment for the first time with hydrodynamics of such liquid mushrooms, and study the effect of droplet impact height, surface tension, and viscosity on the dynamics of such lamellar formations. We further explore the role of the orientation of incoming droplet impact, ie whether head on or offset collision with the rising jet or satellite droplet. We discuss the spatiotemporal evolution of the lamella diameters, and its susceptibility to surface tension, viscosity, and droplet impact height. We put forward a theoretical model based on energetics, to predict the maximum spread diameter of the lamellae, which yields accurate predictions with respect to our experiments. Our findings may help to provide important insights towards a fluid dynamic phenomenon observed often in nature and may be important in niche utilities as well.2025-01-28T16:21:03ZAkshay Manoj BhaskaranArnov PaulApurba RoyDevranjan SamantaPurbarun Dharhttp://arxiv.org/abs/2501.16926v1An oceanic basin oscillation-driving mechanism for tides2025-01-28T13:16:31ZTides represent the daily alternations of high and low waters along coastlines and in oceans, and the current theory (termed the gravitational forcing mechanism) explains them as a manifestation of the response of ocean water to the Moon's (Sun's) gravitational force. However, although the purely hydrodynamic models representing the current theory have been widely tested over global ocean, their tidal elevation accuracies are generally low. This implies an uncertainty as to whether the gravitational forcing mechanism is the best explanation for tides. In this study, we present a new theory (termed the oceanic basin oscillation-driving mechanism), in which tides are explained as a manifestation of oscillating ocean basin that is intricately linked to the elongated spinning solid Earth due to the Moon (Sun). Based on this new theory, we develop an algebraic tide model and test it using 11-year observations from 33 bottom pressure stations over the Pacific Ocean, the average Root Mean Square (RMS) deviation of tidal elevation predicted by this model against observation is 7.54 cm. Using a ratio of M2 elevation RMS of ocean tide model EOT11a and its total tidal elevation RMS as a reference, we estimate the total tidal elevation RMS of six purely hydrodynamic models (i.e.,Hallberg Isopycnal Model, OSU Tidal Inversion software-GN ,STORMTIDE model, OSU Tidal Inversion Software-ERB,STM-1B, and HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model to be 59.93, 51.64, 57.05, 38.56, 86.92, and 53.56 cm, respectively.2025-01-28T13:16:31Z41 pages, 12 figures, 5 tablesPhys. When a bubble collapses so strongly that it emits light, the light emission is usually called sonoluminescence; in the case of the shrimp, it is called "shrimpoluminescence". The bubble collapses so fast that no heat can escape and the gas trapped in the bubble becomes hot enough to ionize. Light is emitted through electron-ion bremsstrahlung, electron-atom bremsstrahlung, and electron-ion recombination. In this paper, we study the dynamics of a sonoluminescing bubble and learn how to calculate the spectrum of emitted light, allowing us to explain the physical mechanisms of shrimpoluminescence.2025-01-27T16:17:30ZSubmitted to the physics department at the University of Colorado in Feb. 2022 to satisfy qualifying exam requirements during my PhDTyler C. Based on this mechanism, we suggest that the Last Universal Common Ancestor is a type of lifeform that utilize hydrogen molecules as donors of electron transport chains.2022-06-26T08:09:30Z9 pages, 1 figureActa Astronomica Sinica,2024,65(6):58Lei Feng10.15940/j.cnki.0001-5245.2024.06.003http://arxiv.org/abs/2412.12100v2Hawking for beginners2025-01-20T20:17:23ZStephen Hawkings most important scientific contribution was his theoretical discovery that black holes aint so black, since they emit thermal radiation as if they were hot bodies with an absolute temperature known as the Hawking temperature. Although this year marks half a century since Hawking made his discovery, it remains unknown to the vast majority of people. In his popular books, Hawking explains the significance of his discovery in a simple way, using the so-called vacuum quantum fluctuations. The aim of this work is to bring Hawking's discovery to the widest possible audience, especially physics teachers. To do this, we will develop a derivation of the Hawking temperature that fairly faithfully translates Hawking's quantum fluctuation model into the mathematical language used by a typical physics teacher, whether in training or in practice.2024-11-12T00:52:21Z7 pages, 4 figuresThe Physics Teacher 2025Jorge Pinochethttp://arxiv.org/abs/2501.10701v1Centenary progress from the Nernst theorem to the Nernst statement2025-01-18T08:52:28ZIt is found from textbooks that there are the different versions of the schematic diagram related to the Nernst equation, and consequently, it leads to some discussion related to the Nernst equation and the discovery of other meaningful schematic diagrams never appearing in literature. However, this paper argues that theories originating in this field have direct implications for how we think about viable inhabitation of the Earth. To demonstrate SETI's impact on environmental humanities, this paper introduces Fermi paradox as a speculative tool to probe possible trajectories of planetary history, and especially the "Sustainability Solution" proposed by Jacob Haqq-Misra and Seth Baum. This solution suggests that sustainable coupling between extraterrestrial intelligences and their planetary environments is the major factor in the possibility of their successful detection by remote observation. By positing that exponential growth is not a sustainable development pattern, this solution rules out space-faring civilizations colonizing solar systems or galaxies. This paper elaborates on Haqq-Misra's and Baum's arguments, and discusses speculative implications of the Sustainability Solution, thus rethinking three concepts in environmental humanities: technosphere, planetary history, and sustainability. The paper advocates that (1) technosphere is a transitory layer that shall fold back into biosphere; (2) planetary history must be understood in a generic perspective that abstracts from terrestrial particularities; and (3) sustainability is not sufficient vector of viable human inhabitation of the Earth, suggesting instead habitability and genesity as better candidates.2024-11-08T21:33:43Z16 pages, 1 figure, 2 equationsLukáš Likavčanhttp://arxiv.org/abs/2412.02671v2In Search of Extraterrestrial Artificial Intelligence Through Dyson Sphere-like structures around Primordial Black Holes2025-01-09T16:25:56ZAre we alone? It is a compelling question that human beings have confronted for centuries. The search for extraterrestrial life is a broad range of quests for finding simple forms of life up to intelligent beings in the Universe. The plausible assumption is that there is a chance that intelligent life will be followed by advanced civilization equipped or even dominated by artificial intelligence (AI). In this work, we categorize advanced civilizations (on an equal footing, an AI-dominated civilization) on the Kardashev scale. We propose a new scale known as the space exploration distance to measure civilization advancement. We propose a relation between this length and the Kardashev scale. Then, we suggest the idea that advanced civilizations will use primordial black holes (PBHs) as sources of harvesting energy. We calculate the energy harvested by calculating the space exploration distance. Finally, we propose an observational method to detect the possibility of extraterrestrial AI using Dyson sphere-like structures around PBHs in the Milky Way and other galaxies.2024-12-03T18:45:18Z9 pages, 2 figures. In physics, one of the biggest successes of thermodynamics is its explanation of order arising from disordered phases of matter through the minimization of free energy; In 2019, Berezovsky showed that the mechanism describing emergent order from disorder in matter can be used to explain how ordered sets of pitches can arise out of disordered sound, thus bridging the gap between science and the arts in a powerful way. In this paper we analyze his method in detail, generalizing it beyond the 12 tone system of intonation of Western music by explicitly considering Gamelan instruments and clarifying some details in the hope of strengthening it and making it better known and recognized.2025-01-05T04:07:04Z13 figures, 21 pagesL. Major difficulties in explaining to people the basic concepts of quantum mechanics reside in the apparent impossibility of representing quantum superposition with examples taken from everyday life. In this context, I propose a new pictorial paradigm that illustrates a number of quantum concepts by means of optical illusions, potentially without raising misconceptions. The method is based on "bistable reversible figures", which induce in the viewer a multistable perception, conveying a direct understanding of superposition, random collapse, and observer effect via a sensorial experience. I present the advantages and discuss the limitations of this analogy, and show how it extends to the concepts of complementarity and quantum entanglement, also helping to avoiding misconceptions in quantum teleportation. Finally, I also address quantum spin and quantum measurement by using different types of optical illusions.2025-01-02T20:45:16Z6 pages, 9 figures This article may be downloaded for personal use only.
