This reaction has never been directly measured, and constraints from a previous time-inverse measurement leave large uncertainties in the reaction rate. We measured $^{18}$F($α,p$)$^{21}$Ne cross sections directly for the first time covering from $2 \leq E_{cm} \leq 4$ MeV. Combining these results with previous work and comparisons to statistical model calculations results in a substantial improvement in uncertainties in the reaction rate. Cross sections were measured in inverse kinematics at TRIUMF-ISAC using a radioactive $^{18}$F beam and ANASEN with an extended $^{4}$He gas target. Protons were detected in arrays of silicon-strip detectors with the measured trajectories and energies allowing reconstruction of the center-of-mass energy and final state in $^{21}$Ne populated. We found the total cross section is in good agreement with statistical calculations, though population of the second excited state in $^{21}$Ne is greater than predicted. This direct measurement is combined with the previous time-inverse measurement and a new reaction rate is calculated for 0.1--3 GK. The uncertainties in the $^{18}$F($α,p$)$^{21}$Ne reaction rate have been reduced to a sufficient level to allow robust predictions from AGB models. The new recommended rate leads to a 45\% increase in $^{19}$F production compared to the previous rate. 2026-09-05T22:43:33Z K. S. Davis J. C. Blackmon C. M. Deibel G. L. Wilson M. Alcorta L. T. They are experimentally extracted via Rosenbluth separation, which measures the elastic scattering of electrons and protons at multiple beam energies and angles at fixed momentum transfer Q2. Conventionally, form factor values are obtained by plotting reduced cross sections against the virtual photon polarization parameter epsilon and then extracting the slope and intercept of the best fit lines. An alternative visualization method, proposed by Hofstadter and Herman in 1960, plots GM2 vs. GE2 curves instead. The best fit values of GE2 and GM2 are immediately visible from the intersection region of the curves and their uncertainty bands. In this work, we apply both conventional and Hofstadter-Herman visualizations to classic 1994 SLAC elastic scattering data. We demonstrate that the Hofstadter-Herman method reveals previously obscured regions of form factor parameter space and highlights subtle experimental discrepancies among data sets. Our results motivate adopting this visualization method as a routine diagnostic cross-check at the Electron-Ion Collider and elsewhere to flag normalization shifts and related adjustments before they enter global fits. 2025-11-15T03:05:57Z Tyler Williams Contact person Jennifer Rittenhouse West Contact person Douglas W. Particular emphasis is placed on the distinction between independent-particle occupancy, long-range collective and pairing correlations, tensor-driven neutron-proton correlations, and short-range correlations generated by the repulsive core and noncentral components of the nuclear interaction. The discussion develops the overlap-function language, spectroscopic factors, eikonal stripping and diffraction, distorted-wave impulse approximation, factorization and spectral functions, center-of-mass and recoil effects, two-nucleon amplitudes, pair densities, and the relation between measured cross sections and ab initio or shell-model structure. The well-known reduction of experimental single-particle strength relative to simple shell-model expectations, its dependence on separation-energy asymmetry, and the continuing debate over reaction-model systematics are treated in detail. 2026-09-05T18:23:21Z 15 pages. Its composition, oxygen areal density and impurity content were characterized by elastic backscattering spectrometry (EBS), and the impurity-induced background contributions were investigated by in-beam $γ$-ray spectroscopy. EBS results indicate that the Cr$_2$O$_3$ film exhibits good stoichiometry and uniformity, with $^{16}$O areal densities ranging from $(3.24-3.25)\times10^{17}$ atoms/cm$^2$. The EBS analysis reveals a carbon atomic fraction of approximately 1.25-1.29\% in the Cr$_2$O$_3$ layer, while a large amount of carbon impurities are also identified on the surface of Cr substrate. In-beam $γ$-ray spectra reveal prominent transitions associated with $^{27}$Al and $^{24}$Mg at 844, 1015, and 1369 keV, mainly originating from $^{12}$C+$^{16}$O fusion reactions induced by carbon impurities under $^{16}$O irradiation. Meanwhile, characteristic $γ$-rays emissions from evaporation channels of the $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O reaction, including $^{31}$S, $^{31}$P, and $^{28}$Si, were also observed and can be used to extract the $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O fusion cross sections. This work provides an experimental basis for the development of high-purity oxide targets and the optimization of target configurations for future low-background $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O fusion cross section measurements. 2026-09-05T15:45:22Z C. The analysis uses data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.58 nb$^{-1}$ collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2023. The $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ production cross section, $σ_{\mathrm{t\bar{t}}}$ = 3.42 $^{+0.54}_{-0.51}$ (stat) $^{+0.50}_{-0.43}$ (syst) $μ$b, is measured in dilepton final states using a fit to a multivariate discriminator that combines the decay electron and muon kinematic properties with the multiplicity of bottom quark jets. The result is consistent with perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) accuracy employing several nuclear parton distribution functions. In addition, the Drell$-$Yan production cross section ($σ_\text{DY}$) for dilepton masses above 10 GeV and the ratio of $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ to DY cross sections ($R_{\mathrm{t\bar{t}}/\mathrm{DY}}$) are found to be compatible with the NNLO predictions. The observables $σ_{\mathrm{t\bar{t}}}$, $σ_\text{DY}$, and $R_{\mathrm{t\bar{t}}/\mathrm{DY}}$ are measured separately for central and semicentral PbPb collisions to investigate for the first time the dependence of top quark production on the collision impact parameter. 2026-04-29T18:36:31Z Replaced with the published version. In parallel, increasingly sophisticated analyses have improved constraints on the initial state and the transport properties of the QGP. The equation of state links stellar masses, radii and tidal deformabilities to this regime, but recovering this key quantity from sparse observations is an ill-posed inverse problem. Existing analyses bury a prior in a fixed functional form, unevenly weighting admissible solutions and biasing the result. We reconstruct the equation of state with a denoising diffusion model that keeps prior, physics and data separate: it learns an inspectable, physically motivated prior anchored to first-principles nuclear theory, while perturbative-QCD and astrophysical constraints are imposed exactly. Future measurements therefore will update the posterior by reweighting alone, without retraining or resampling. The inferred radius of 12.6 km and tidal deformability of 469 at 1.4 solar masses reproduce Gaussian-process and heavy-ion-informed inferences despite a far broader prior. We find near-conformal but still stiff matter in the heaviest stars, consistent with a gradual hadron-quark crossover and disfavouring a strong first-order phase transition. More broadly, coupling a learned prior to exactly enforced physics establishes a template for ill-posed inverse problems where theory and data constrain different regions. 2026-08-18T07:35:51Z Julia Yu. This requires nuclear models to be validated against experimental data, such as non-unique forbidden $β$ decays, which have been found sensitive to details in nuclear calculations, most importantly to the renormalization of the axial and vector currents. %, parametrized as a quenching of $g_A$ and $g_V$. We report here a measurement of the 2$^{nd}$ forbidden $^{99}$Tc $β$ spectrum performed for the first time with Silicon Drift Detectors, state-of-the-art semiconductor detectors for low-energy spectroscopy. We designed a novel hybrid spectrometer using a LYSO crystal read by a SiPM to precisely calibrate our main detector and to accurately measure the background. We then compared our measured spectrum with one obtained using cryogenic calorimeters, as well as with predictions from the Realistic Shell Model. Starting from Realistic Shell Model calculations performed with Bare decay operators, we carried out a Bayesian analysis to extract the average quenching factors required to reproduce both the measured spectral shape and the experimental half-life, obtaining $q_{g_A}=0.40(1)$ and $q_{g_V}=0.47(1)$. These values quantify the average renormalization of the axial and vector currents, respectively, and were compared with those predicted by RSM calculations employing Effective decay operators, thereby providing a benchmark for assessing the ability of the model to describe the second-forbidden $β$ decay of $^{99}\mathrm{Tc}$. More broadly, this comparison tests the reliability of the theoretical framework also used to predict $0νββ$ nuclear matrix elements. 2026-09-04T18:20:02Z Andrea Nava Andrea Del Contrasto Leonardo Bernardini Matteo Biassoni Tommaso Bradanini Chiara Brofferio Marco Carminati Silvia Capelli Francesco Cappuzzello Manuela Cavallaro Massimiliano Clemenza Giovanni De Gregorio Giulio Gagliardi Giorgio Grosso Nunzio Itaco Irene Nutini Alessia Pozzi Nicola Zorzi http://arxiv.org/abs/2609.05315v1 Spectator shadowing as the source of the breaking of NCQ scaling at RHIC-FXT and FAIR energies 2026-09-04T16:08:08Z The apparent scaling of the elliptic flow of identified hadrons with the number of constituent quarks indicates the presence of quark coalescence, and in turn suggests the presence of a deconfined state in heavy-ion collisions. Recent measurements at RHIC found a breaking of NCQ scaling at low energies and suggested that this marks the onset of partonic collectivity at higher energies. Here, we present a new framework embedding the effect of spectator shadowing into the flow scaling relations. Using a toy model with an idealized quark coalescence source and a ballistic Glauber model for the bypassing spectator, we demonstrate that the observed breaking is an effect of spectator shadowing. 2026-09-04T16:08:08Z 6 pages, 1 figure. The analysis is based on data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.36 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.26 nb$^{-1}$. The asymmetry is quantified using the amplitude $A_{2}$ of the second-order harmonic modulation of the decay-muon azimuthal distribution. A negative $A_{2}$ = $-$0.194 $\pm$ 0.022 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.018 (syst.) is observed with a significance greater than five standard deviations for the first time. The $A_{2}$ values show no significant dependence on the J/$ψ$ meson rapidity or the degree of overlap of the colliding ions. A theoretical model in which the coherently photoproduced J/$ψ$ meson inherits the linear polarization of the incident photon is consistent with the data. When considered together with recent measurements of coherent $ρ^0$ $\to$ $π^+π^-$ photoproduction in ultraperipheral collisions, these results provide a direct observation of spin dependence in the azimuthal asymmetry of decay products from coherently photoproduced vector mesons. In addition, the observed correlation with the event plane may enable a novel approach to reaction plane determination in the future. 2026-09-03T18:38:38Z Submitted to Physical Review Letters. Heavy-flavor particles, containing charm or bottom quarks, provide unique sensitivity to the QGP because they are produced predominantly in the initial hard scatterings and interact with the medium throughout its evolution. This review summarizes measurements of open heavy flavor and quarkonia by the PHENIX and STAR experiments, focusing primarily on 200 GeV collisions recorded during the first two decades of RHIC operations. We discuss key results on charm, bottom, and quarkonium production cross sections; cold nuclear matter effects in small collision systems; nuclear modification factors and elliptic flow of open heavy-flavor hadrons; charm baryon-to-meson production ratios; and the suppression patterns of quarkonium states in Au+Au collisions. We further highlight the resulting insights into the properties of the QGP, including heavy-quark transport, hadronization mechanisms, and quarkonium dissociation and regeneration in the medium. Finally, we discuss the future prospects of the RHIC heavy-flavor program, enabled by the large data sets collected by the STAR and sPHENIX experiments, and its strong synergy with the future Electron-Ion Collider, where precision measurements of heavy-flavor production in electron--proton and electron--nucleus collisions will provide complementary constraints on the structure of QCD matter. 2026-09-03T18:04:47Z Review article submitted to a special issue in Journal of Physics G Cameron Dean Xin Dong Rongrong Ma Cesar Luiz da Silva http://arxiv.org/abs/2609.04049v1 TQ4Q2.0 Fragmentation Functions for Fully Heavy Tetraquark Production 2026-09-03T16:22:20Z We investigate the fragmentation dynamics underlying the production of fully heavy tetraquarks by means of the TQ4Q2.0 collinear FF set, covering scalar ($0^{++}$), axial-vector ($1^{+-}$), and tensor ($2^{++}$) configurations. The fragmentation inputs are determined within NRQCD factorization for the complete set of relevant partonic channels and are subsequently evolved across heavy-flavor thresholds through the HF-NRevo scheme. Perturbative uncertainties associated with fragmentation-scale variations are consistently propagated together with nonperturbative effects encoded in color-composite long-distance matrix elements. Attention is devoted to the axial-vector sector, whose fragmentation pattern makes it especially sensitive to intrinsic-charm contributions at LHC and FCC energies. TQ4Q2.0 therefore provides an uncertainty-aware framework for exploring fully heavy tetraquark production over a broad kinematic range and for connecting exotic-hadron spectroscopy with the partonic structure of the proton. 2026-09-03T16:22:20Z 7 pages, 1 figure. Angular distributions for fragments from Z = 1 to 6 were extracted in the range 2 <= theta_lab <= 8 degrees. Particle identification was achieved by combining the Delta E - E technique with Pulse Shape Analysis, and precise energy calibrations were performed. The results show that for heavier fragments, the angular distributions are better described by the Van Bibber formulation than by the Goldhaber model, consistent with the dominance of a wide component from dissipative processes in the measured angular range. Notably, alpha particles exhibit an anomalously narrow angular distribution, likely originating from the intrinsic cluster structure of [12]C. Comparisons with existing data at the same incident energy show very good agreement, with a more complete set of species reported here, while a kinematic scaling is proposed to compare our data with previous experimental data at 50 and 95 MeV/nucleon. 2026-09-03T10:37:05Z G.
